World snooker champion Luca Brecel reveals he has ‘hardly seen’ trophy and doesn’t have it on display

IN 2023, Luca Brecel was the toast of the snooker world when he won the World Snooker Championship.

The Belgian potter defeated four-time champion Mark Selby 18–15 in an entertaining final at the Crucible.

It’s the biggest honour Brecel has ever won in the game.

However, the 29-year-old is currently training in the triathlon and plans to compete in an IronMan competition.

Amusingly, he has put his World Snooker Championship trophy in a gloomy part of his home.

Brecel said: “I’d keep the trophy and the medal or whatever you get as well, it would mean a lot to me.

“I’m not like that in snooker, but it would be an amazing achievement, so I’d keep that.

“The replica World Championship trophy has been in the basement somewhere for a long time, I’ve never really seen it. But this one I’d keep out definitely.”

Many past snooker legends have swilled beers out of their replica trophy.

Or made sure it sits pride of place on the mantelpiece. Not Brecel.

Every winner of the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible is awarded their own replica trophy.

The WPBSA keep the original for safe-keeping, until it is presented on the night of the final to the winner.

Incredibly, the original trophy was bought by 15-time world champion Joe Davis in 1926 for a measly £19 (equivalent to around £1500 today).

Snooker’s biggest stars will congregate at the Crucile in just six months time for the game’s most famous tournament.

Brecel will be hoping to rediscover his form from 2023, after a disappointing season this year.
