Watch awkward moment Olympics rugby star tackles REFEREE by mistake live on TV
A URUGUAYAN rugby sevens star accidentally tackled the REFEREE during his country’s defeat to Kenya at the Olympic Games.
After the South Americans had taken a 7-0 first-half lead, their opponents came roaring back after the break with two tries to send the game into extra time.

As Asati prepare to score, Uruguay’s Mateo Vinals desperately tried to get back at him
But Vinals inadvertently took down referee Paulo Duarte with a lasso tackle

And it was the second of those tries that created the hilarious moment involving referee Paulo Duarte.
As Samuel Asati picked up the ball and darted to the line to give Kenya the lead, Duarte found himself in between the scorer and Uruguay‘s Mateo Vinals.
This resulted in him being clattered by Vinals who was attempting to stop Asati.
The tackle left one of the BBC commentators in hysterics as he praised Vinals’ execution.
He said: “I have never seen that before. I have never seen perfect execution of a lasso tackle on the referee.”
Kenya went on to win the match 19-14 in extra time as Patrick Odong scored the crucial try to hand them victory.
The match-up was a semi-final to determine ninth to 12th in the men’s rugby sevens.
Kenya and Uruguay had already both finished bottom of their respective groups.

Paris 2024 Olympics – Opening Ceremony

The historic Opening Ceremony which is taking place on the River Seine rather than a stadium ends proceedings on Friday evening.
While there has been football and rugby sevens among events which started before the ceremony this week, they will not be taking place on the day of the big bash.
Only shooting pre-event training will take place on the day of the Opening Ceremony.

Meanwhile, Uruguay will take on Japan as they look to avoid rock bottom.
