This Cheltenham winner is perfect for Aintree – Templegate’s 14-1 Grand National tip
HE dominated Cheltenham, can he conquer Aintree?
It wasn’t quite his total of ten winners from last year, but Willie Mullins once again scooped top trainer honours at the Cheltenham Festival.
Gaillard Du Mesnil flexed his Grand National credentials by winning at Cheltenham last week and is fancied for the big raceSportsfile
His total of six put him clear of the pack and he’ll be looking for further Grade 1 success at Aintree’s Grand National festival.
The National hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Mullins, however, who has won it just once – all the way back in 2005 with Hedgehunter.
Can he bridge the 18-year gap? After Cheltenham, the ante-post markets certainly believe so, with two of his runners being backed.
Sun Racing’s Templegate has picked out his Aintree fancies and one of Mullins’ Cheltenham winners has caught his eye for the world’s biggest steeplechase.

LOOKING TO AINTREE
THIS year’s Aintree Bowl could be an absolute cracker but BRAVEMANSGAME will be very hard to beat if heading there after his Gold Cup second.
He did stay the 3m2f but just not as well as Galopin Des Champs.
Protektorat will get a lot closer if he heads to Aintree too but Paul Nicholls’ star looks too strong and three miles around the flatter track should play right to his strengths.
GAILLARD DU MESNIL 14-1 Grand National
NOBLE YEATS, CORACH RAMBLER, CONFLATED, DELTA WORK and GAILLARD DU MESNIL all massively advertised their Grand National credentials.
The former really caught the eye when coming from off the pace to run into fourth and we know the extra mile at Aintree will be right up his street.
Conflated still has his stamina to prove for the National trip but Corach Rambler looks more attractive than ever carrying just 10st 5lb after his Ultima Chase win.
I was impressed by Delta Work’s win in the Cross-Country Chase and will have him on my National shortlist but he didn’t seem to quite get home when third last year.
He looked the winner coming to the business end but was outstayed and that could happen again.
GAILLARD DU MESNIL is the one I really liked for the National on his Cheltenham run.
He stayed on strongly and was just getting going after 3m6f and up that hill. Hopefully the National Hunt Chase hasn’t taken too much out of him because his 11st for Aintree looks perfect.
