Lionel Sebastien Scaloni has written his name in gold as the coach who made Lionel Messi greatest of World Football. He has won his third title with the Argentine National Team in four yeas with Lionel Messi as captain.
The 44-year-old coach was in tears after the final whistle of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties to claim the title. He joins Cesar Luis Menotti and Carlos Bilardo as the coaches to have won the Mundial for Argentina.
It’s been almost 4 decades the South American side won the trophy. They last won in 1986 in Mexico. Le Albiceleste failed to win the trophy in two attempts. They came close in 1990 and 2014. They lost to all those finals to Germany. But now Lionel Scaloni has made them champions again for the third time.
Scaloni took over the ruins of the Argentine National Team after their poor showing in the 2018 World Cup and subsequent sacking of Jorge Sampoli. Under his management, the team went 37 matches unbeaten until their first match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Before Scaloni took over the team, Argentina had gone almost thirty years without a trophy, they last won a trophy in 1993. This was also an era the captain Leo Messi had been highly condemned for his inability to win a trophy with the National Team.
They were beaten by Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the first game but came back strongly to play France in the finals.
Prior to winning the 2022 World Cup, the golden coach led his team to win the 2020 Copa America and also the CONMEBOL – UEFA Cup of Champions. They beat Brazil and Italy respectively to claim the titles.
He has build a technical team made up of former players. Pablo Aimar, Roberto Ayala and Walter Samuel have been his backbone all these while.
Scaloni was part of the Argentina team that played in the 2006 World Cup. The said team also had Captain Lionel Messi in there which would be his first ever world cup appearance.
