The Classic-winning horse who kickstarted Frankie Dettori’s retirment U-turn has been retired to become a stallion
THE horse who kickstarted a memorable 2023 for Frankie Dettori has been retired to stud.
Top trainer Andrew Balding confirmed that 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean will not return next season after his disappointing performance on Champions Day.

Legendary jock Dettori – who brought the curtain down on his career in Britain at Ascot on Saturday – struck up a great relationship with the horse.
They combined to win three races, including the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes in 2022 before he colt bagged the first Classic of the season at Newmarket back in May.
In total, the horse won five times and banked nearly £900,000 in prize-money and he will shortly begin his career as a stallion at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud, which is just outside Newmarket.
A stud fee has yet to be announced for the son of Frankel, but it will be revealed soon as the breeding season in the UK begins in early February.

Balding said: “He just got stuck in the mud at Ascot in the QEII and Frankie looked after him when his chance had gone.
“It was a real shame because we had him in great form at home going into the meeting, but you can’t control the weather and very little got into the race behind Big Rock.
“He has been a brilliant horse for the yard, any horse that wins a Dewhurst and a Guineas will have a special place in your heart.
“I know Frankie loved him and they got on like a house on fire, and I’m sure he will go on to have a successful second career at stud.”
You could argue Dettori’s victory on Chaldean in the Guineas was the moment he started to rethink his decision to retire.
His season went from strength to strength afterwards and, from next year, he will continue his career in California.
