With Fery leading 4-3 with a break in the first set, the match threatened to take a sinister turn.

Moments after playing a behind the back shot, Altmaier suffered a sickening fall while trying to retrieve Fery’s smash.

He yelled out in pain, with medical staff immediately called on to help him.

Following an initial dialogue with the physio, Altmaier gingerly got back to his feet and limped over to his chair.

He then received an official medical timeout, during which he appeared to have his hip thoroughly worked over.

Thankfully he was able to continue, and remarkably broke Fery back to draw level at 4-4 just moments later.

Third seed Aryna Sabalenka was also forced to withdraw, citing a shoulder issue.

Andy Murray, meanwhile, played a practice set with compatriot Kyle Edmund over on the Aorangi Park courts.

The Scot, 37, is likely to decide tonight whether he will take to the court for his first round match against Tomas Machac.
