However, Qatar‘s captain Hassan Al-Haydos led by example when he popped up on the edge of the penalty area from a corner.
The 33-year-old saw the ball clipped in from the left side of the pitch by fellow sub Akram Afif before thundering a volley towards goal.
And there was nothing China goalkeeper Yan Junling could do to stop the effort from going into the net despite being at full stretch.
The wondergoal ended up being definitive as Qatar ran out 1-0 winners.
Reacting to the goal on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, fans could not help but compare the goal to Scholes.
The Manchester United icon scored a similar goal from a David Beckham cross against Bradford in 2000.
