Police give update on Adam Johnson’s death and say they’re reviewing video and speaking to experts

POLICE have today said they are continuing to probe Adam Johnson’s death after his throat was slashed by a skate blade.

The ice hockey star, 29, collapsed on the ice after suffering a gash to the neck when he was struck on Saturday night.

Johnson, a Nottingham Panthers’ forward, was briefly helped towards the side of the rink following the collision with Sheffield Steelers’ Matt Petgrave.

But he collapsed a few paces later and was raced to hospital where he tragically died.

South Yorkshire Police have today confirmed they are still looking into the 29-year-old’s tragic death.

The force said it was continuing to look over footage from when the horror unfolded, and speaking to experts.

The force said: “Since Saturday, detectives have been carrying out a range of enquiries including reviewing footage, talking to witnesses and seeking the advice and support of highly specialised experts to seek to understand the circumstances surrounding what happened.

“We have also been working closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our investigation.”

Johnson‘s death made for heartbreaking scenes as his fellow players raced to form a protective ring as he received emergency medical attention and fiancee Ryan Wolfe, 24, rushed to be at his side.

He was then rushed to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital from the Utilita Arena, but later died of his injuries.

Fans, who had seen the incident described as “one in a million” told how the player was “absolutely distraught”.

His aunt Kari Johnson was watching the game on a live-stream from her home in Minnesota when the “horrific” collision took place, The Times reports.

Johnson’s fiancee took to Instagram yesterday morning to share a picture of the ice hockey player.

The photo was captioned: “My sweet, sweet angel. I’ll miss you forever and love you always.”

The couple are understood to have become engaged over the summer and lived in England together.

A sea of tributes, including flowers, heartfelt messages, a shirt and cup with the player’s number 47, were left by heartbroken supporters from both clubs.

Assistant coach Kevin Moore told the crowd they were “really grateful for all the love and support” shown.

He vowed: “As time goes on we are going to heal, we are going to do that together.

“We are going to be strong and will continue that way and we will do you guys proud.

“We appreciate you coming here today and we thank you for all your support.”
