Olympics star takes brutal swipe at BBC commentators over on-air comments ahead of Paris 2024

AN OLYMPICS star has taken a brutal swipe at BBC commentators due to comments made about his early career.

Rhys McClenagahan slammed commentators for claiming he has “brash confidence”.

McClenagahan, 24, took to social media to discuss the comments made on the BBC.

He wrote: “Really wish the BBC commentators would stop repeatedly sharing their distaste for me in my early career live on TV.

“That ‘brash confidence’ you disapprove of is what got me to where I am.”

The Irish gymnast doubled down as he joked about muting the commentators when watching.

He added: “I’m surely not the only one who hits mute watching gymnastics on BBC.”

His fans offered him plenty of support as they commented on the post.

One wrote: “Rhys you are an inspiration to many young people involved in sport! Keep doing you.”

A second added: “Rhys – ignore them! You keep doing what you are doing. You are an exceptional young sportsman doing the country proud.”

McClenagahan is currently the double world champion on the Pommel Horse.

He defended his gold medal at the European Championships in Italy last week.

And will go into the Paris Olympics this summer as one or Ireland’s top medal hopes.

He was hailed by his coach, Luke Carson, after winning at the European Championships.

He said: “Very proud moment, triple European Champion.

“The goal was to come here and showcase Olympic-level gymnastics, that was certainly achieved.

“Now we recoup, re-energise and work towards final improvements for the Olympic Games.”
