Oli McBurnie BLOCKED from rejoining Sheffield United… but Blades could bring back another old-boy instead

OLI MCBURNIE has seen a reunion with Sheffield United BLOCKED by Las Palmas.

The Scotland striker, 28, joined the LaLiga outfit in July on a three-year deal after he was released by the Blades.

He has played 15 times for the Spanish side – scoring twice.

But manager Chris Wilder was pushing the promotion-chasing club to re-sign the forward he originally signed in 2019.

However, Las Palmas have rejected the approach from them and other clubs.

McBurnie joined Sheffield United from Swansea for £17.5million – with a fee potentially rising to £20million.

At the time, it was a transfer record for a Scottish player.

The fee was beaten a few days later by Kieran Tierney‘s £25 million move from Celtic to Arsenal.

McBurnie found Premier League goals hard to come by.

In the 2022-23 season he was instrumental in Sheffield United’s promotion to the top tier.

His 29 goals in 159 games made him a cult hero for the club.

Off the pitch, McBurnie has courted controversy.

In 2019, he was charged with drink driving – later earning a ban.

Then in 2020, he received a warning from the FA for his conduct amongst Swansea City supporters whilst attending the South Wales derby for allegedly making a rude gesture towards Cardiff City fans.

In 2021, a social media video emerged that appeared to show McBurnie in an altercation with another man.

North Yorkshire Police said that a 24-year-old man had been arrested in connection with an incident where a 21-year-old victim sustained facial injuries.

The following month, North Yorkshire Police said that the case had been concluded, with a penalty notice and caution issued to two of the men involved in the incident.

In June 2022, McBurnie and Sheffield United teammate Rhian Brewster were charged with common assault by Nottinghamshire Police “in relation to disorder at the conclusion of a game at the City Ground on 17 May 2022”.

Both players “strenuously denied” the allegations.

The charges against Brewster were dropped, but the case against McBurnie would go to trial after he pleaded not guilty to an assault charge.

McBurnie was found not guilty in December 2022.
