New development in case of gambled-on horse barred from running minutes before race as ‘shocked’ trainer speaks out

A TRAINER whose horse was barred from running just two minutes before a race after the BHA’s integrity department stepped in has spoken out.

Sean Curran was left ‘shocked’ and ‘flabbergasted’ after Aces Full was blocked from racing at Exeter on Tuesday.

The horse had been smashed off the boards from 14-1 to 9-4 despite never showing much form.

The BHA have remained tight-lipped on the circumstances surrounding pulling the horse.

And now the National Trainers Federation have waded in demanding clarity from the governing body.

Curran, a former jockey with more than 150 winners, was interviewed by stewards at Exeter.

He was asked to give answers concerning ‘the selection of the race for the gelding, their expectations for today, and the riding instructions given’.

Speaking to Sun Racing’s Matt Chapman on At The Races, Curran said he was told the ‘ownership of the horse was a problem’.

Aces Full was due to run in Curran’s name.

Curran told Chapman: “It’s a wall of silence at the minute. I haven’t heard any more.

“I had an interview before the race because the horse had been gambled.

“I told them everything I knew. They seemed to be happy with the situation then just as the jockey got on him I was told he wasn’t allowed to run.”

Bizarrely, a horse called Lafan later on in the day was also backed into 9-4 from 14s at Wolverhampton.

But this one, trained by Barry Brennan, was allowed to run after Brennan had been interviewed.

Incredibly, the horse won at 7-2 – beating the favourite, Give A Little Back, who was trained by Curran.

Asked it there was a link between the horses, Curran said: “My horse seemed well at home so… I don’t know about a link.

“Barry’s horse went there with nice form and had come down a lot in the weights.

“I don’t know about a link – but I don’t back horses.”

Chapman added the whole situation was ‘very weird’.

The NTF’s chief executive Paul Johnson said: “We are in dialogue with the BHA to understand the situation that led to the withdrawal of Aces Full before the race at Exeter on Tuesday.”
