Matthew Hudson-Smith smashes European 400m record but cruelly misses out on Olympics gold medal in final metres
MATTHEW HUDSON-SMITH claimed a silver medal in the men’s 200m after being pipped on the final straight.
He had gone into the final aiming to become the first British man in 100 YEARS to win Olympic gold in the one-lap event.

Hudson-Smith, 29, looked to emulate Scotsman Eric Liddell’s feat from the 1924 Games which was also held in Paris.
Liddell triumphed in the 400m after refusing to run the 100m on the Sabbath for religious reasons – a story that was later detailed in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire.
A century on and Hudson-Smith nearly honoured that iconic performance with a stunning display of his own, only to be beaten at the last.
Despite being defeated, Hudson-Smith beat the European record – becoming the fourth fastest man in history in the process.
He crossed the line in an impressive 43.44 seconds – but Team USA’s Quincy Hall’s astonishing final straight saw him triumph in 43.40.
Zambian Muzala Samukonga earned bronze with a time of 43.74 seconds.
