Fresh beginnings or the same old Manchester United? That’s the question on everybody’s lips ahead of Friday’s opener with Fulham.

There’s renewed optimism around Old Trafford following a busy summer on and off the field. There’s been a flurry of backroom changes while £90million has been spent on defender Leny Yoro and attacker Joshua Zirkzee.

Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui are also set to arrive in the coming days, and they may well be handed debuts given Erik Ten Hag’s lengthy list of defensive absentees.

United have been further bolstered by the return of winger Jadon Sancho, who is back in the fold following a 10-month exile.

It’s been difficult to judge United’s progress on the pitch over the summer. Victories over Rangers and Real Betis in pre-season were tempered by losses to Premier League opponents in Liverpool and Arsenal.

And we didn’t learn a great deal from their rather sedate “derby” against Manchester City in the Community Shield – so there are quite a few unknowns heading into Friday’s encounter.

Fulham, meanwhile, are riding high after the arrival of Arsenal playmaker Emile Smith Rowe. He’s hit the ground running after netting in both of his pre-season appearances against Sevilla and Hoffenheim. But it remains to be seen how the Cottagers will fare following the loss of crucial duo Joao Palhinha and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Rodrigo Muniz 1st away goalscorer

Garnacho isn’t the only player expected to improve again this term. Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz is also set for a big campaign following a highly impressive debut season in the Premier League.

The Brazilian, 23, struck 10 goals in 33 matches for the Cottagers and that was without penalties.

Much of the attention will be on Emile Smith Rowe on Friday, but if Fulham score then we think Muniz is the most likely candidate.
