Williams was on six months’ gardening leave when he decided to go back to United as their emerging talent chief.
He previously worked for the Red Devils as an academy scout and first team recruitment analyst between 2017 to 2022.
United are aiming to build a “best-in-class” academy recruitment team, with Williams taking on the role of lead scout.
The 36-year-old will report to head of academy recruitment Luke Fedorenko and is one of several recent changes to the scouting and recruitment department.
Across the last six months, United have swooped for staff from Ipswich, Cardiff and Blackburn to bolster the area.
Meanwhile, several scouts have been promoted and changed roles within the club.
Williams’ return follows the arrival of Jason Wilcox as technical director.
United confirmed Wilcox’s appointment this week as he joins with immediate effect from Southampton.
