Man Utd ratings vs Liverpool: Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes put in horror shows but not one player puts in performance

LIVERPOOL put in a stunning performance to embarrass Manchester United 7-0.

The Red Devils were shambolic during the second half as the players lost their heads following multiple pieces of sloppy defending and the day was a disaster.

Former Man Utd transfer target Cody Gakpo netted twice, as did Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. Roberto Firmino then added a seventh.

Here is how SunSport rated the individual performances as Man Utd capitulated.

David De Gea – 4

De Gea will be disappointed to concede seven, especially getting beaten by such a tight angle on the third and seventh goal. There was not much he could do about the others as he stood helpless.

Diogo Dalot – 4

He was given the nod ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka despite his good form. Dalot is far better going forward, his pace and ability to cross did show before the collapse.

However, he made a mistake in Gakpo’s first goal, Dalot pressed Andy Robertson but never got tight enough to him, which therefore led to the ball being played behind him into the winger.

Raphael Varane – 3

Varane did not cover himself in glory as Gakpo made it 1-0. He was slow to anticipate the danger when the ball was hit in behind Fred, who was filling in out wide.

The centre-back didn’t get out to him quickly enough and failed to take him onto his weaker left foot.

As shown at PSV, Gakpo is deadly when cutting in and Varane didn’t do enough to stop him from playing to his strength and United were punished.

Lisandro Martinez – 3

The first-half was typical Martinez, he prevented a goal with a great block on Nunez and was tenacious and physical.

However, he was left on the floor after being twisted and turned by Salah.

As the goals increased, he lost his head and was poor with balls coming into the box.

Luke Shaw – 2

Shaw was sloppy on the second goal. He initially gave the ball away with a woeful pass and then could not sort his feet out to clear, handing it back to Harvey Elliot, who crossed to Nunez to head home.

On commentary, Gary Neville called his defending “appalling.”

Casemiro – 4

He picked up a slight knock in opening stages and it was not his best performance, giving the ball away a few times in the first 45 minutes.

He was also clumsy when trying to put a tackle in to prevent Liverpool‘s second goal.

Fred – 4

As Dalot pushed forward, Fred drifted into the full-back role. Yet he looked lost when there, taking a few steps too many towards Gakpo, which allowed a huge gap to form between him and Varane.

Robertson showed his quality by hitting an inch perfect ball that split the right-hand side of United’s defence. Fred did not cut off the passing line and it let the goalscorer get in behind and get a shot away.

Antony – 5

The tricky winger was lively throughout and was a threat, but he lacked the end product needed.

He put himself about and was aggressive in the second-half as he was another who couldn’t keep his cool.

Wout Weghorst – 6

He worked as hard as ever and playing in the No10 role allowed Marcus Rashford to use his pace on the counter as the centre-forward.

Bruno Fernandes – 3

An awful day and his passion led to him getting in trouble.

He did not do much and embarrassingly dived, holding his face when Ibrahima Konate made contact with his chest. Fernandes had fully lost his temper at the end and it’s a miracle he wasn’t booked.

Neville labelled his behaviour as a “disgrace”.

Marcus Rashford – 5

Being played as the striker, the tactic from Erik ten Hag was to use his speed with direct and fast attacks.

With the game goalless, he was found well by Shaw with a long ball but he failed to get a shot that had conviction off.

Substitutes:

Alejandro Garnacho (for Weghorst, 58) – 5

All players are to blame, yet it was not really his fault.

Scott McTominay (for Fred, 58) – 4

McTominay was a tad unlucky as he failed to regain possession twice in the build-up to Salah’s goal and Liverpool’s fourth, but he should have cut the ball out.

Marcel Sabitzer (for Casemiro, 77) – 5

Not much he could do coming on at 5-0, but he did play a few decent passes.

Tyrell Malacia (for Martinez, 78) – 4

He moved to left-back for Shaw and was just as bad as him.

Anthony Elanga (for Rashford, 85) – 5

Had not time to leave an impact.
