PAUL SCHOLES’ pick to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager is still available.

The United icon tipped Ralph Hassenhuttl to succeed his former team-mate before Erik ten Hag was appointed.

However, Ten Hag is now under pressure at Old Trafford, which has continued to grow following Sunday’s loss to rivals Manchester City.

If the Dutchman is sacked, Scholes could again call for Hassenhuttl to take over, with the former Southampton boss still on the market.

Prior to Ten Hag’s appointment, the ex-England midfielder had highlighted the Austrian’s relationship with the interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Scholes explained: “Watching that interview, there is a closeness between them.

“As a sporting director, he was the right choice at the right time for Leipzig – he did brilliantly – and I’ve always liked him.

“I’ve always thought the football he plays at Southampton with not the best squad.

“The type of football has worked for them. His teams have been good to watch; I think it comes across really well.

“This would be a different kind of pressure; I think people around this club, and fans especially, are thinking more of possibly Pochettino or an Antonio Conte and what people have been at the bigger clubs.

“The more I think about it, I don’t think it would be a bad thing. The way he goes about his business, he looks good.”

Rangnick had been set to remain at Old Trafford in an advisory role at the time, before those plans were scrapped and he instead took over the Austrian national team.

Meanwhile, Hassenhuttl was later sacked by Southampton in November 2022.

He has remained out of work since, whilst the Saints went on to finish bottom of the Premier League.

Hassenhuttl had been lined up for a return to management earlier this year but talks with Hoffenheim in February collapsed.
