Jockey Levi Williams charged with murder after man, 71, died following ‘altercation’ in town centre
A JOCKEY has been charged with murder after a 71-year-old man died following an “altercation” in a town centre.
Levi Williams, 25, was arrested following the alleged brawl between four people in Newmarket, Suffolk, earlier this month.

The victim was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but sadly passed away yesterday.
Williams has now been charged with murder and is due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court today.
A 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and a 45-year-old man held on suspicion of affray have both been bailed.
The horror unfolded on March 8 at around 3.40pm when a fight allegedly erupted on the high street.
Two men – including the tragic 71-year-old – were taken to hospital for treatment.
One, aged 45, was dismissed later that night while the older victim has since died.
Williams was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and subsequently bailed.
He was re-arrested and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning following the man’s death.
Williams was banned from racing for 18 months in September 2023 after he took cocaine in a pub toilet three days before a race.
It was the second time he was barred from the sport for failing a drug test.
The apprentice jockey told a hearing after his first ban: “I didn’t really think. I was just stupid.”
Williams appears to have last competed in a race in Wolverhampton in May 2023.
He has ridden 12 winners from 156 rides – with his four winners for Simon Dow the most he has ridden for any trainer.
Suffolk Police said: “A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder, after a man who sustained serious injuries following an incident in Newmarket earlier this month died in hospital.
“A 23-year-old man, who was also arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, and a 45-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of affray, both remain on police bail until June 5 and June 9 respectively.”
