Ipswich Town make their return to the Premier League, and assignments don’t get much tougher than a lunchtime clash with Liverpool at Portman Road.

Kieran McKenna’s side have risen to the very top having secured back-to-back promotions, but this season’s task is likely to be of a completely different nature.

The Tractor Boys will consider their campaign a huge success if they can avoid relegation.

Home form was hugely important in their promotion from the Championship. McKenna’s side lost just one of their last 39 home league fixtures (W28, D10) and haven’t lost on the opening game of a league season in 11 years.

But keeping that record against Liverpool looks unlikely.

The Reds are embarking on their first campaign without Jurgen Klopp at the helm in quite some time as the Arne Slot era begins in earnest.

And there’s been plenty to smile about in pre-season with the Merseyside outfit beating Real Betis, Arsenal, Manchester United and Sevilla – scoring 10 and conceding twice.

Last week’s 4-1 thrashing of Sevilla at Anfield offered signs Liverpool could continue to be devastating in attack with Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota the likely starting front three.

One good omen for Liverpool fans to note is that their side have never lost a Premier League match at Portman Road against Ipswich Town, with their last visit a 6-0 win in February 2002. They’ve played more games there without losing than any other ground in the Premier League.

Diaz delight

Colombian winger Luis Diaz was electric against Sevilla last weekend, netting twice in six first-half minutes.

But his performance won’t have been too much of a surprise for those in attendance given his exploits last season. The 27-year-old produced 94 efforts at goal last season with a shot every 28 minutes on average – a record bettered only by Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez.

It will be interesting to see how Ipswich Town’s Leif Davis operates on Saturday afternoon.

The full-back has topped Ipswich’s assist charts for the past two seasons and spends the majority of his time glued to the opposition’s right flank.

He is given the freedom to rampage up the left wing but that could see him caught out on a few occasions in front of an expectant home crowd with Salah looking to profit down the flank.
