I fell in love with English non-league side on Football Manager & travelled 1,000 miles for my stag do to be the mascot

LET’S be honest, a stag do to Barcelona including a trip to the Nou Camp would be perfect for any football fan.

But what if you’re from Barcelona in the first place?

What about a trip to Milan and the San Siro? Or Munich for the Allianz Arena? Perhaps a trip to Wembley? Old Trafford, maybe?

How about the Alfreton Town Football Club Impact Arena Stadium?

Well that’s exactly what one group of lads did to send their pal off into married life.

And the reason behind it is spectacular and, to quote the man himself, “crazy”.

The story starts 12 years ago, when Cristobal Novo Gonzalvo, 34, was on holiday in England.

He visited a little town called Alfreton in Derbyshire during his trip and “fell in love”.

As soon as Cristobal got home, he fired up Football Manager and quickly started an Alfreton Town file to keep his love affair alive.

After 12 years of passionately supporting the non-league side – currently in the sixth tier of English football and who left Americans “disgusted” with their proper footy scran – Cristobal got his wish to return.

The 34-year-old is due to get married this month and his pals were tasked with organising a stag do for him.

They couldn’t think of a better send-off into married life than a trip to Alfreton Town… where he would be MASCOT for the day.

Cristobal travelled over 1,000 miles to get from Barcelona to Derbyshire to proudly throw on his Alfreton Town top and line up alongside the players for their 2-2 draw with Darlington Town.

The Spaniard has since opened up on his incredible day… and how his Alfreton Town fandom was born.

Cristobal told LADbible: “I was on holiday and I came to the town. It was wonderful and I fell in love right away.

“As soon as I got home I made them my team on Football Manager.

“I don’t really know why I love the team so much…

“It could be the red strip they play in or their original name or the fact that they are a small town so far away from me, I just love them.

“I have been successful on the game but I wanted to see them in real life.”

Cristobal even met the players, pictured here with Bailey Hobson

On his stag do, Cristobal continued: “It was a brilliant day. The game was very entertaining and I was honoured to me made a mascot for the day. It was a crazy thing to happen.

“I was so desperate to see the town again my friends arranged for me to come over for the game.

“My friends were impressed with the kindness of the people. They know that I like Alfreton and we have friends there and they decided to go for my stag there.

“It was incredible. I got to go on the pitch and meet the manager and it was great. The main event of the stag do was the trip to Alfreton Town FC.

“Over the weekend many beers were consumed, and we had a great time.”

Cristobal joked his mum thinks he’s “crazy” and that’s he’s warned his fiancee about his “problem”.

He said: “My future wife knows about me and my crazy problem with football and also Alfreton.

“I have already said we will go together to watch Alfreton next season so hopefully they will win.”
