GET the alarm clock ready for the race that stops a nation – it’s the Melbourne Cup!
The Flemington finale takes place at 4am UK time, so it will be an early start for punters looking to kick start their Tuesday with a winner.
Verry Elleegant was the winner last year but British runner Deauville Legend is fav for the 2022 Melbourne CupGetty
But it’s a British raider who could reward bettors with James Ferguson’s Deauville Legend heading the betting.
Who does Sun Racing tipster Templegate fancy for the big one though?
Read on for his tip below and check out our total Melbourne Cup guide.
Templegate’s Melbourne Cup tip
MONTEFILIA can give hot favourite Deauville Legend a run for his money at a much bigger price.
She ran a cracker in the red-hot Caulfield Cup last time, doing all her best work at the end of the 1m4f trip.

She has the vital quality of being able to settle in her races so the early breakneck pace won’t find her out.
Jockey Jason Collett knows what he’s doing and can have her in a good position to make the most of her finishing kick. Soft ground suits too.
Deauville Legend is a worthy favourite but he not proven in the testing conditions he faces at Flemington.
He does shape like a real stayer though and was impressive last time out in the Great Voltigeur at York.
William Buick has headed Down Under and has every chance on Without A Fight.
He has lots of talent but the worry is this big field as his best form has come against fewer rivals.
He has won on heavy ground so will handle conditions and can hit the frame.
Gold Trip was second in the Caulfield Cup before getting no luck in the Cox Plate last time.
He handles the going well and has place prospects trying to be the first winner with so much weight since 2005.
Hoo Ya Mal’s form is tied in with Deauville Legend from their battle in the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
He was below par in the St Leger but this longer distance could be the making of him.
Matt Chapman’s Melbourne Cup tip
I reckon GOLD TRIP might be the latest horse to join the legends to have won this coveted prize.
He’s an ex-European who used to be with Fabrice Chappet in France.
The son of Outstrip (a Breeders’ Cup winner, incidentally) has only raced up to a mile and a half and has to go two miles on Tuesday.
But he’s always looked like a proper middle distance/staying animal, and has to his name in Europe a third to Mogul in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris and fourth behind Sottsass and In Swoop in the Arc at Longchamp.
Now that’s better form than likely Cup favourite Deauville Legend and, while Gold Trip has to give that rival 6lb, I think he’ll be up to it.
What time is the Melbourne Cup?
Sky Sports Racing will have live coverage of the Melbourne Cup on channel 415.
