Grand National 2024 weights CONFIRMED as ‘clear favourite’ emerges with bookies for Aintree race
THE weights for the 2024 Grand National have been revealed – and bookies have already picked out their ‘clear favourite’.
Vanillier, for top Irish trainer Gavin Cromwell, flew home to finish second to Corach Rambler last year.
Sunday TimesThe weights have been released for the 2024 Grand National and one horse leads the way with bookies[/caption]
PAFootie legend Harry Redknapp could have a runner in the shape of Shakem Up’Arry[/caption]
The handicapper has edged him up just slightly from that heroic effort and he will carry 10st8lb in the world’s most famous race.
That is more than a stone less than top weight and epic King George winner Hewick, who has been saddled with 11st12lb for legendary Irish handler Shark Hanlon.
Cromwell is now dreaming of his nine-year-old becoming just the fourth grey in history to win the National.
Last year’s champ Corach Rambler – who scooped one of his co-owners, a student at university, a share of £500,000 – will carry 11st2lb.
Grand National odds via William Hill
12-1 Vanillier
14-1 Corach Rambler, Mahler Mission, Noble Yeats, Panda Boy
16-1 Minella Indo, Monbeg Genius
20-1 Kitty’s Light
25-1 Ain’t That A Shame, Capodanno, Delta Work, Galvin, I Am Maximus, Latenightpass, Nassalam
33-1 Chemical Energy, Hewick, Sail Away, Salvador Ziggy, Stattler, Threeunderthrufive
40-1 bar
The Irish trainers dominate the top weights – which signify the top-rated horses – with Gordon Elliott’s Conflated in second.
Noble Yeats, who won the National in 2022, will carry 11st8lbs – one less than Conflated – while Willie Mullins’ Capodanno and Elliott’s Coko Beach will both carry 11st4lbs.
The top home hope appears to be Gary Moore’s awesome Welsh Grand National winner Nassalam.
He destroyed his sorry rivals by 34 lengths at Chepstow in December and will bypass a tilt at the Gold Cup to go for racing’s biggest prize.
Another eyecatcher is former Gold Cup champ Minella Indo.
He will carry 11st2lbs and could go into the race on the back of Cross Country Success at the Festival.
While there is noise around Monbeg Genius – the controversial horse owned by Michelle Mone and Doug Barrowman.
He was not made part of a £75million court order freezing the couple’s assets and has the green light to run at Aintree.
Football royalty could also have a place in the field after Harry Redknapp’s beloved Shakem Up’Arry was given a low weight – but he needs a lot of horses to pull out before guaranteeing a run.
William Hill’s trading manager Jamie McBride picked out a few more the bookies are running scared of.

He said: “We have a healthy respect for several of the Grand National entries following the weights announcement with three of the likely runners in next month’s Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham among some we are keeping onside.
“Delta Work has been luckless in this race the last couple of years but gets to run from a lower mark this year and has to be dangerous, so we’ve cut him to 25-1.
“Galvin is 11lbs lower than when departing at the first fence last year and given he showed signs of a revival last time, we have shortened him into 25-1.
“Minella Indo looks likely to go well in the Cross Country and it’s obviously a race that has been a good pointer to the National in the past so that, in combination with the Rachael Blackmore factor, can see him prove popular at 16-1.
“Panda Boy is very dangerous if he gets in off a nice low weight of 10st3lbs and we have cut him to 14-1, while we’re happy to lay Corach Rambler as things look much harder for him this time around.
“With that in mind, Vanillier is the clear favourite at 12-1 as it’s clear his whole season has been geared around this race and he still looks feasibly weighted off 10st8lbs.”
This year’s Grand National will look different to the last with a number of changes brought in by bosses.
The biggest is that the number of runners has been slashed from 40 to 34.
This year’s contest – to be run on Saturday, April 13 – will also see first of the 16 fences moved 60 yards closer to stop horses running too fast at the start.
The traditional off time of 5.15pm will also be moved to 4pm in a bid ensure a safer running environment for all horses.
