Ghana fail to qualify for AFCON 2021 after loosing to Sudan
Ghana lost the chance to qualify for the 2021 AFCON when they were piped by Sudan in the Group C game played at Khartoum on Tuesday afternoon.
The Black Stars of Ghana were forced to wait for March 2021 to decide their fate for the African Cup by the Secretary Birds of Sudan.
Ghana only needed a point to ensure their
qualification to the continental championship after winning all previous
matches.
Mohammed Abdelrahman Yousif shocked Ghana in the
92nd minute with a strong header to secure the points for the Sudanese National
Team.
Ghana played without Captain Andre Dede Ayew and
first choice goal keeper Richard Ofori who also doubles as the deputy captain.
Dede Ayew could not play because of an injury
sustained in the first leg played in Ghana last Thursday but Ofori was serving
suspension.
Former number goal keeper Fatawu Dawuda took over the post but his great exploits could not earn the needed one point for Ghana’s qualification for the AFCON 2022.
Mubarack Wakaso, Jeffery Schlupp and Majeed Ashimeru joined the team for the Sudan trip after missing the team’s 2-0 win in Ghana.
Ghana started the game brilliantly as they were able
to control all aspects on the pitch. Their conditioning betrayed them as they
lost steam to allow the Sudanese take over the game in the second half.
On the 65th minute, Ghana’s Captain, Jordan Ayew had
his great effort been saved by Sudan goal keeper Abu Eshiren.
Midfielder Mubarak Wakaso got his fine shot been pushed away by Abu to deny Ghana any hope of a goal in the last 15 minutes of the game.
Sudan had other plans as they had to wait till the
last minutes to get their sole goal through Mohammed Yousef’s connection to an in
swinger.
Despite the loss, Ghana still leads the group with 9
points and better in terms of head to head with South Africa who also have 9
points.
Ghana would have to face
South Africa and Sao Tome at home on March 22 and 30th, 2021 respectively to
seal qualification for the African Cup.
