Forgotten ex-England star slams Wigan owner for ‘sad state of affairs’ with fans happy to see someone ‘say it how it is’

WIGAN’s failure to once again pay their players on time has been SLAMMED by a former England international.

The Latics were deducted points in March for failing to pay their squad on time a whopping three times.

But the former Championship side has since failed to provide players and staff with their wages on time a further two occasions.

A handful of players have been paid, much to the frustration of defender Steven Caulker.

In a LinkedIn post, the centre-back said: “I might buy a football club next week.

“Put my sponsorship all around the stadium, sign loads of players, promise the fans I am committed, and then when it comes to payday, just pay 5 or 6 players who I think are an asset to the club.

“Could you imagine?”

A frustrated Caulker then proceeded to lament the situation Latics fans find themselves in following the club’s relegation to League One.

The 31-year-old said: “Again, my thoughts are with the good people of Wigan.

“You deserve better. It’s a very sad state of affairs.”

A Latics fan was thrilled to see Caulker call out the club, saying: “Refreshing to see someone saying it how it is!”

Wigan issued a statement on their latest failure to pay wages on time last week.

He said: “There has been some delay with wages which were due to be paid yesterday (Friday 5 May).

“Staff wages were paid on Friday with the Chairman, Mr Talal Al Hammad, making a decision to pay as many employees as possible within the organisation with the resources available.

“All remaining playing and non-playing staff will be paid at the earliest opportunity following the Bank Holiday weekend.

“The ownership group, Phoenix 2021 Limited, insist they are working hard to ensure that this is rectified as soon as possible and apologise again for the stress this has caused.

“All first-team players have been given the day off from training today given the difficult circumstances.

“The Club will make no further comment until it has further clarification.”
