Fans slam ‘absolutely ridiculous’ handball rule as Liverpool’s opening goal somehow stands against Leeds

FANS have slammed the handball rule after Liverpool’s first goal against Leeds was allowed to stand.

Cody Gakpo put Liverpool in the lead at Elland Road, but after Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared to handle the ball in the build-up to the goal.

The defender won the ball after a poor touch from Junior Firpo, but replays suggested that he used his arm to control the ball.

Alexander-Arnold played the ball to Mohamed Salah before getting it back and then found Gakpo at the back post for a simple tap-in.

After seeing the replays, fans flocked to social media to vent their frustration at the handball rule.

One viewer tweeted: “The handball rule is absolutely ridiculous.”

A second commented: “That’s a shocker not giving that handball!!”

A third wrote: “I have literally got no idea what and what isn’t handball these days cos it changes game to game man.”

A fourth said: “That’s a defo handball another disgraceful decision.”

While a fifth pointed out that it was similar to the decision that saw West Ham get themselves back into the game against Arsenal on Sunday.

Declan Rice won possession after Thomas Partey failed in his attempt to flick the ball past him.

However, replays appeared to show the ball touching Rice’s arm, leading Arsenal fans to bemoan the referee’s failure to award a free-kick.

Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead before the break before Luis Sinisterra got Leeds back into the match.

However, Diogo Jota restored the visitor’s two-goal advantage shortly after and Salah made it four in the 63rd minute.

Jota got his second of the game in the 73rd minute with a tidy finish from the edge of the box.
