The manager drilled 4v3 situations in midfield and footage of the match showed how his players took advantage.

Wolves overran Bournemouth in the centre of the park by switching the play and having a man over, just like they practised in training.

And O’Neil’s tactical masterclass was hailed by fans as one said: “Brilliant stuff.”

Another added: “Gary O’Neil has got it! Very good young manager.”

One agreed: “Fantastic game play.”

Another commented: “Incredible analysis here! He is a great coach! Shame he couldn’t keep his job at Bournemouth.

“Next best England manager behind Eddie Howe maybe?”

O’Neil explained how he has to be adaptable in the dugout to pick up points against certain sides like Manchester City.

He said: “Since I have taken over the big key for me is being adaptable and flexible.

“My ideal would be, and I’d love to take on Man City and press everything and have 70 per cent of the ball.

“Is that going to happen and we win the game? Probably not. So it is about how far away I need to go from my ideal to give us the best chance to win the game.

“When Man City came to us it was nowhere near my ideal, it was low, we didn’t have much of the ball but it gave us the best chance to put three points on the board.”
