Eze, 26, thought he opened the scoring with a brilliant free-kick before referee Samuel Barrott ruled it out.

It was Barrott’s first game in charge of a top-flight fixture in England.

The midfielder whipped his shot from a ridiculous angle, which caught out goalkeeper Mark Flekken and went in off the post.

But Barrott had blown his whistle for an infringement in the box which saw the goal not count.

To make matters worse for the Eagles, the hosts then went up the other end to open the scoring through Bryan Mbeumo.

The winger got away from the Palace defence down the right-hand side before cutting inside and curling his effort past Dean Henderson.

But fans were seething on social media that Eze had his goal chalked off by the referee.

A second commented: “Eze is NUTS, why has this been disallowed?”

A third wrote: “I feel bad for Eze man, this is the best goal to never exist…how was this disallowed.”

A fourth said: “Eze robbed of a screamer and then Palace’s clean sheet gone seconds later. The pain is real.”

Another added: “Criminal to disallow Eze goal. Premier League referees are the worst.”

The Premier League confirmed the decision as Will Hughes fouled Nathan Collins and the whistle was blown before the ball cross the line.

This means that VAR could not intervene.

A statement read: “The referee awards a free-kick to Brentford a foul by Hughes on Collins.

“The whistle was blown before the ball entered the goal, so VAR cannot intervene and the referee’s call stands.”

However, pundit Jamie Carragher could not understand the decision.

He said on Sky Sports: “The referee has had a nightmare. It’s a monumental mistake.”
