There’s not other way of putting this – England have absolutely cruised into the knockout stages of the European Under-21 Championships.
The Three Lions continued their perfect start to the competition on Wednesday when brushing aside Germany to finish top of Group C with a maximum nine points.
The 2-0 win followed comfortable victories over the Czech Republic and Israel the the same scoreline. Six goals scored and none conceded for the Young Lions.
England are now 9/4 favourites to win the tournament, ahead of Spain at 3/1 and France at 7/2.
But the pressure is set to ignite against Group A runners-up Portugal on Sunday, where senior England manager Gareth Southgate will again be in attendance.
Things haven’t been a smooth for Portugal, who won ONE of their their three opening fixtures – although their group did feature co-hosts Georgia, Netherlands and Belgium.
The winner will play either Georgia or Israel at the semi-final stage next week.
On target…
Cameron Archer’s record for England Under-21s has been terrific. The Aston Villa forward has netted five goals and provided one assist in nine appearances.
That record is even more impressive given the 21-year-old has only started three times and accumulated 346 minutes of competitive action, giving him a goal every 69 minutes.
Three of those goals have been either as the First Goalscorer or Last Goalscorer. It’s unclear whether manager Lee Carsley will start Archer or bring him off the bench — but backing him to Score First OR Last Goal at 29/10 with William Hill looks a good angle.

Yes, England have managed to keep three clean sheets on the bounce, but Portugal are very rarely denied at least one goal inside 90 minutes.
In fact, only once in their last 18 matches have Portugal failed to hit the target, and even then they were down to ten men against Georgia.
England, meanwhile, look simply irresistible going forward. The Three Lions have scored 2+ goals in six of their last seven games and have been praised for their relentless attacking approach.
