Ready to do it all again?

England just about came through their opening Euro 2024 clash against Serbia unscathed with a valuable three points on the board.

And Denmark’s draw with Slovenia means the Three Lions boast a two-point advantage at the top of Group C.

Gareth Southgate’s side will likely top the group with a victory in Frankfurt on Thursday, but an improved performance is perhaps what’s needed most.

England showed glimpses of why they entered the tournament as favourites in the opening 25 minutes, but it became laboured and rather uninspiring thereafter.

Luke Shaw has made very good progress this week but will likely start on the bench, meaning an unchanged XI is expected at the Waldstadion.

This will be the fourth encounter between Denmark and England at a major tournament, and it’s good news for the latter who’ve never lost to Thursday’s opponents (W2, D1).

However, that optimism could be tempered by the fact England have never won their opening two matches at a European Championship tournament.

As for the Danish side, Christian Eriksen marked his return to the European Championship with a special goal but Slovenia spoiled the party thanks to Erik Janza’s deflected effort.

The result heaps pressure on Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand to get a result against England before their final clash against Serbia.

Goals?

Nope.

It’s difficult to see England steamrolling their opponents, who are placed at 21 in FIFA’s world rankings.

The Danish side are full of experience and meetings between these sides are never particularly heavy on goals. In fact, there have only been five scored in their last four meetings in all competitions.

The Three Lions have also conceded just six goals in their last 13 matches at tournament finals. Meanwhile none of the last five H2Hs have been decided by more than a one-goal margin. This should be a tight affair.

Carded

There’s quite a temptation to select Jannik Vestergaard to be booked on Thursday, especially at 4/1.

The Leicester defender, 31, was no stranger to the referee’s notebook last season having collected 13 yellow cards in 44 appearances.

However, he’s likely to sit deepest in a back three with Denmark more likely to spring their attacks on the counter to try and release Rasmus Hojlund in behind.

So Trent Alexander-Arnold could be the answer when trying to help shield England’s defence from quick counters.

On target

Christian Eriksen rolled back the years against Slovenia.

The midfielder, 32, was freed from his deeper role at Manchester United and allowed to operate as a traditional No.10.

He thrived. Eriksen produced more than double the number of shots than any of his colleagues with five, made seven key passes and got his name on the scoresheet.

He’s likely to be as influential against England, and 2+ shots on target looks a very reasonable shout at 17/5.
