Dutchman Kruijswijk, 36, was seen being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher as he was taken to hospital.

Compatriot and team-mate Van Baarle, 32, was sat by the side of the road with his arm in a sling.

A number of other high-profile riders went down in the crash including race leader Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic.

Organisers have since confirmed they have neutralised the stage due to the lack of medical assistance left available to continue the race.

This means the riders are instructed to complete the stage together, with no time calculations taken at the finish.

A statement on social media read: “The stage will be neutralised due to the lack of medical assistance still available.

“No time will be taken on this stage, and there will be no stage winner.”

Reacting to the incident, the commentator said: “We don’t need to see this.”

While one fan replied: “Road was so wet that every rider trying to brake, crashed. One of the biggest crashes I’ve seen in a while. Hate it.”

Another added: “Man this season is so awful with the crashes. Heck, even I’m on the couch with a broken collarbone.”
