Brand new Olympics 2024 sport ABANDONED after dramatic start with chiefs forced to bring event to a close
THE WOMEN’S windsurfing marathon was abandoned in Marseille today due to a lack of wind.
The sport is making its debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics this year but competitors now face an anxious wait to see if the event will continue.

The beginning of the event was signified when a power boat whizzed in front of competitors.
But after a dramatic start, the race was soon under threat.
A lack of wind soon saw competitors having to drop their foils and ‘pump’ their sails to propel themselves forward in what led to an extremely slow race.
Israel’s Sharon Kantor was leading with most legs completed before the event was eventually abandoned.
Again, the power boat came into play as it raced in front of competitors to signify the event was over.
Israel’s Sharon Kantor was leading to that point.
The abandonment is a potential let-off for Brit Emma Wilson, who had been leading the standings going into today’s race.
She had a significant lead over Kantor but had struggled with the lack of windy conditions.

The event will not be re-run today and both the weather forecast and schedule clashes with other events mean the event may have to be cancelled.
The men’s marathon was also meant to start earlier today.
But the lack of wind saw the event pushed back to later in the day.
The men’s windsurfing Marathon was also adjusted to comprise of a series of shorter races.
