Some big clubs could not make it past the group stage of this season’s UEFA Champions League and would now continue their chase for continental glory in the Europa League.
Some of the high-profile teams that dopped into the second tier of European club competition after Wednesday’s matches include FC Barcelona of Spain and Borussia Dortmund of Germany.
Barca on their own suffered more humiliation as they were trashed 3-0 by Bayern in their last Group E fixture on Wednesday which made the La Liga giants finish third in their group.
FC Porto, RB Leipzig, Sevilla, Sheriff Tiraspol, and Zenit are other clubs that also dropped into the Europa League after Wednesday’s group games.
As earlier reported by Naija News, the game between Atalanta and Villareal had to be postponed to Thursday because of heavy snowing.
Meanwhile, a total of fifteen teams have confirmed their places in the round of 16 for this season’s UEFA Champions League competition.
This follows the conclusion of group stage matches across various centres on Wednesday.
The 16th team could not be determined on Wednesday as the game between Atalanta and Villareal had to be postponed to Thursday because of heavy snowing.
