Arsenal vs Aston Villa preview

Arsenal’s pivotal week continues when they welcome high-flying Aston Villa to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners enter the weekend in top position, ahead of rivals Liverpool on goal difference and above Manchester City by a single point with seven matches of the season remaining.

It’s a well-worn cliche, but every fixture is a Cup Final for Mikel Arteta’s side as they look to win their first English league title since the 2003-04 campaign.

Arsenal arrive having drawn 2-2 with Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, but the result extended their unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions.

In fact, Arsenal have not lost a Premier League game in 2024, winning 10 of their last 11 and scoring 37 in the process.

They boast the most goals scored and fewest conceded of any side in the division, and will have their eyes fixed firmly on bolstering that record this weekend against a familiar foe.

Former Gunners boss Unai Emery knows how to get the better of his former side as witnessed earlier this season when Aston Villa beat Arsenal 1-0 on home turf.

But the Villans have stumbled of late, winning just one of their last seven games in all competitions. They also have a fairly disastrous record in the fixture having lost nine of their last 11 at the Emirates.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa betting tips

Assist

Mikel Arteta will no doubt field his strongest starting XI for Sunday’s visit of Aston Villa, and that of course includes captain Martin Odegaard.

The Norwegian superstar, 25, has provided seven assists in all competitions this season and ranks second behind Bukayo Saka for assists in the 2023-24 campaign.

However, that tally could and perhaps should have been a lot higher given he’s created a whopping 78 chances for his colleagues this season, and a total of 14 big chances – which is higher than any of his colleagues.

Yellow

Kai Havertz looks a good shout for a booking this weekend.

The Germany international is available at 7/2 to go in the referee’s notebook, and that could be a good price given no Arsenal player can beat his 40 fouls committed in 30 appearances this season.

He’s been booked 11 times in 43 appearances this season, and has been shown a yellow card THREE TIMES by Sunday’s referee David Coote since arriving in the Premier League.

Coote is also averaging 5.38 yellow cards per match – the second highest of any referee in the division this season.

And again

Given the game’s significance and referee David Coote’s perchance for dishing out bookings, we’re going to stick with yellow cards.

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, who’s collected nine bookings in all competitions this season is available at 2/1.

Only Douglas Luiz has committed more fouls for Villa this season, but he’s suspended for Sunday’s clash through suspension and that should mean a tougher afternoon for the Scotland international.
