The shot-stopper is now away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon and his place in the United side could be under threat when he returns.
Altay Bayindir is set to deputise in Onana’s place while United could strike a deal for Provedel, report Italian outlet Quotidiano Sport.
Provedel’s future at Lazio is uncertain with the keeper understood to be looking for an improved contract.
The 29-year-old first impressed in Serie A for Emploi and Spezia before moving to Lazio.
He has since kept 32 clean sheets in 71 games for the Italian giants, sparking interest from the Red Devils.
United are planning to bolster several areas of their squad following the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
They have reportedly drawn up a four-man shortlist including a top-level striker who could play alongside Rasmus Hojlund.
Everton youngster Jarrad Branthwaite could upgrade United’s defence while Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise is also being targeted.
