Rice, 24, was withdrawn at half-time and replaced by Jorginho.

After the game, Mikel Arteta revealed he was subbed off with a back problem.

The manager said: “He had some discomfort in his back.

“He was telling us during the first half that he was uncomfortable and when we assessed him at half-time he could not continue, so we had to change him.

“It’s strange when a player like him asks to come off because he’s uncomfortable.”

There was hope the issue would not be long-term and further tests carried out yesterday presented good news for Arsenal.

It is thought Rice will be back in contention for Saturday’s Premier League clash away at Bournemouth.

Arsenal travel across London tomorrow to face Brentford in the Carabao Cup with the midfielder set to not be risked.

Rice was unlikely to start anyway with Arteta planning to rotate his starting XI.

Meanwhile, Bukayo Saka was taken off towards the end of the Spurs game as a precaution.
