RACHAEL BLACKMORE is under investigation by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) over her ride on Lady Rita at Kilbeggan last Friday evening.

The record-breaking jockey appeared to ride a finish a circuit too soon in the three-mile handicap hurdle, sparking huge controversy.

Rachael Blackmore faces an IHRB investigation over her ride at Kilbeggan

Blackmore was originally let off by stewards after she appeared to ride a finish a circuit too soon

Blackmore began to push away at her filly with just over a furlong to race, and she quickly moved into a five or six length lead.

And she began to pull her mount up after passing the winning post, despite there being another lap to go.

Racecourse commentator James Griffin said at the time: “Rachael Blackmore just having a look over her shoulder, I think she may have mistaken the winning post.”

Lady Rita managed to stay in front but later faltered after the second-last hurdle and ended up trailing home in fourth, just over 21 lengths behind winner Desert Heather.

The Kilbeggan stewards called Blackmore in for questioning but opted not to take any action, accepting her excuse that she had tried to inject some pace into the race but she eased her horse down after she became “lairy” in front.

However, the IHRB said on Saturday that they are going to further investigate the ride.

Niall Cronin, the IHRB’s communications manager, told the Racing Post: “Following the race at Kilbeggan on Friday night, we noted the outcome of the stewards’ inquiry into the ride Rachael Blackmore gave to Lady Rita.

“We are now in the process of gathering all relevant information surrounding the race and the subsequent inquiry that led to the raceday stewards at Kilbeggan giving the decision they did.”

Blackmore’s last win came on Thursday aboard Lucky Zebo at Clonmel.

The 11-5 shot was completing a double on the day for Blackmore and trainer Henry de Bromhead after Gentlemen Joe struck earlier in the day.
