But now he is facing the prospect of not even making it to Saturday after finishing his second round on five over par.

It came following a poor par score on Thursday which left him playing catch-up.

Play was suspended minutes after McIlroy finished on the 18th hole on Friday as bad weather brought the players off the course.

American Sam Bennett is four shots back on eight under, followed by Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland.

Justin Rose is the only British player within nine shots of the lead.
