THE world’s richest race could hardly be coming at a better time for Frankie Dettori.

The legendary jockey has taken California by storm this winter and rode a spectacular 251-1 four-timer at Santa Anita on Saturday.

The 52-year-old shocked the racing world when announcing his plans to retire at the end of this flat season.

He began his worldwide farewell tour with a stint on the west coast of America this winter and he could hardly had a better run of things.

He is currently second in the Santa Anita jockeys’ championship and performed his trademark flying dismount after completing his stunning acca.

His four-timer kick off with success aboard 2-1 shot Piroli before odds-on favourite Harper’s Jolly followed up a few races later.

And he banged in the final two winners on the card at 9-2 and 7-1 to the delight of punters – and the misery of the bookies.

Dettori said: “Amazing. You’ll have to go back a few years since I’ve had four winners in one day.

“I had some good rides, they all ran super. The last filly, she’s very game and I was eager for the wire to come, they were coming from every direction, and we managed to hang on.

“It’s been a super day. All the horses and all the people, they are all for it and they have been fantastic.”

And he will soon jet off to Riyadh for the huge, money-spinning ride aboard Country Grammer in the £16.6 million Saudi Cup this weekend – which would be the biggest prize Dettori has ever won.

He rode Bob Baffert’s star six-year-old to victory in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita back in December.

And he is the 7-2 second favourite with Paddy Power to bag the big one in the desert on Saturday – a race he finished second in 12 months ago.

Dettori said: “I’m two wins from two for Bob on Country Grammer and the horse was second in the Saudi Cup last year so hopefully we can go one better this weekend.

“I was super pleased to win on him on Boxing Day as there was a 40,000 crowd and the pressure was on.

“I wanted to turn on the style and he did. Bob made it very clear to me back then the Saudi Cup was the next target.

“I’ve been over to ride him in his work and he has been flying.”
