But Plymouth’s players and manager believed there was a foul in the build up and protested to the referee.

Rooney was seen in heated conversation with fourth official Jacob Miles, who called across referee James Linington before play restarted.

Manchester United legend Rooney was then shown red by Linington for comments made following the equalising goal.

But it appeared to only spur on Argyle as Morgan Whittaker scored a last-gasp winner in the SEVENTH minute of added time.

Irish international Michael Obafemi has opened the scoring for the host’s on 15 minutes.

But Rankin-Costello looked to have condemned Rooney’s side to a frustrating 1-1 draw.

That was until Whittaker headed home himself to snatch all three points for Plymouth.

Rooney got the last laugh and returned to the pitch after full time to celebrate just his third win of the season.
