Gary Neville highlights ‘worrying’ Man Utd problem that Premier League clubs can exploit ahead of new season

GARY NEVILLE has pinpointed a “worrying” problem for Manchester United ahead of the new season.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has spent big reinforcing his squad this summer, splashing out a whopping £147.5MILLION on Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.

Neville is happy with the acquisitions his former side have made over the last few weeks.

But he reckons two areas of the squad could prove to be problematic if the injury bug bites.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “There is still an imbalance in some parts of the team that need to get better.

“There are worries with Luke Shaw, who is now injured, at left-back. Who is going to play there?

“Potentially up front too, if Rasmus Hojlund does continue with his injury. United are short up there.”

United light the blue touch paper for the new Premier League season this evening, welcoming Fulham to Old Trafford.

The quartet of arrivals have given the Theatre of Dreams faithful optimism for the new campaign.

But Ten Hag is far from happy with how his troops have performed during their brief pre-season.

The Dutchman said: “It’s true it’s not the pre-season where you can in five [or] six weeks work on the team. It’s very complicated.

“We had the USA tour squad, then we add the players who did the Euros and Copa America, and now new signings and now we have to make a team from it.

“That team is not ready, but the league starts – and there are more managers to deal with this problem.

“We definitely have this problem but, still, we have some rules, some principles and we have to make a start.

“We can’t hide ourselves, we can’t run away from it, so we have to deal with it.”
