Chelsea vs Man City preview

A new era begins at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as Enzo Maresca takes charge of his first competitive match as Chelsea manager.

Not only is it the Italian’s first league game in charge of Chelsea, but it’s his first game as a manager in the English top flight.

As if that’s not difficult enough, he’s got to navigate his way past Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who are looking to clinch their fifth-successive title.

Maresca’s only been in the door five minutes but the bookies have him as the third most likely Premier league manager to be sacked this season after a difficult pre-season campaign.

The Blues lost to Celtic, Manchester City and Real Madrid, while securing draws with League One Wrexham and Inter Milan in their last outing.

During those matches, Chelsea’s players struggled to adapt to Maresca’s slower and possession-based style of football. They conceded 12 goals in total and half of those were from individual mistakes when playing out from the back.

That should be music to the ears of Guardiola and Co. who profited from those mistakes when winning 4-2 during their US pre-season tour.

Erling Haaland bagged himself a hat-trick that evening, and will be licking his lips at the prospect of playing a club that he struck two against last season.

In stark contrast to Chelsea’s mammoth spending spree and backroom changes, not a great deal has changed at the Etihad.

Julian Alvarez has left and Savinho has arrived, but other than that it’s a very settled operation for City, who beat their arch-rivals Manchester United to the Community Shield last weekend.

Chelsea vs Man City betting tips and predictions

The Norwegian superstar, 24, has struck 90 goals in 99 appearances for the Cityzens and should be fresh and ready after a full pre-season and no international commitments.

Consistency counts for a lot in the Premier League, and a settled Manchester City look a dangerous prospect for a Chelsea side who’ve ripped up everything to start afresh.

The new personnel, playing style and manager could take some time to settle for the Blues if their pre-season results are anything to go by.

They still have more than enough quality players to cause City issues at the other end, but 12 conceding 2+ goals in four of their six pre-season matches isn’t a good sign against what will most likely be the league’s highest scorers.
