PLAYERS will risk yellow cards if they speak to referees during Euro 2024.

Uefa chiefs are aiming to stamp out dissent during this summer’s tournament.

In particular, they want to erase scenes in which multiple players swarm around officials.

Uefa refs chief Roberto Rosetti has confirmed that players who complain to officials will now instantly be booked.

He said: “With dissent, the process is clear.

“We are doing this for football, for the image of the game, for the next generation of players and referees.

“It is impossible to explain a decision to 10 or 12 players who are surrounding the referee.”

Each team’s captain will be able to speak to the referee for an explanation on decisions, so long as they do so in the right way.

Rosetti, 56, continued: “We need one player, the captain only, who must approach the referee in a respectful manner.

“The referee will explain to the captain, while the fourth official will explain to the coach at the same time.

“We don’t want other players mobbing and surrounding the referee. Only the captain.”

Players from each of the 24 participating teams have been visited by a senior referee to have Uefa’s new directives explained.

“The players listened in a good way. Of course there can always be discussions about anger,” Rosetti went on.

“That’s a never-ending story. It’s a grey area but it was good to share with them.”

Uefa have also made tweaks when it comes to foul play and the handball role.

Rosetti explained: “We ask the referees to have zero tolerance for foul play. This is something we can’t accept.

“When it comes to handball, not every touch is a penalty. We want to consider the movement of the player.

“If the ball is close to his body and in a natural position, trying to avoid contact, it is no penalty

“But unless it is a deliberate handball by the defender, even if it is a penalty, it is not a yellow card any more.”

The tournament is set to kick off tomorrow night in Munich, when Scotland take on hosts Germany at Bayern’s Allianz Arena.
