Liverpool’s incredible transformation under Klopp from first-ever XI to Premier League and Champions League winners

JURGEN KLOPP transformed Liverpool into Champions League winners after picking the likes of Lucas Leiva and Alberto Moreno in his first starting line-up.

The German took over in October 2015 with the Reds languishing in 10th place in the Premier League table.

Brendan Rodgers had led Liverpool to a sixth-place finish the season before, with Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling leaving the club that summer.

The club spent big to replace the pair, with Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke arriving for considerable sums.

However neither were available for Klopp’s first game in charge away at Tottenham, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

He still had Philippe Coutino to call on but Liverpool’s line-up has since been transformed, with the Brazilian perhaps the only player who would get into the current team.

The Reds have upgraded considerably in every department, with Alisson taking Simon Mignolet’s place in goal as well as Mamadou Sakho being swapped out for Virgin van Dijk.

Liverpool have spent big sums on Darwin Nunez, Dominic Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz under Klopp, but that trio arrived after Champions League and Premier League success.

Remarkably, Klopp took his first Liverpool squad to the Carabao Cup and Europa League finals, losing both, before building his trophy-winning side.

He first got rid of players like Martin Skrtel, Moreno and Lucas before signing Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum and Joel Matip, who all played a role in Liverpool winning the 2019 Champions League.

Mo Salah and Andy Robertson followed and remain key players for Klopp now, with Salah becoming a club legend.

They all formed part of Liverpool’s Premier League winning side in 2020 along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, with James Milner, Divock Origi and Adam Lallana the only members of Klopp’s first line-up featuring in that squad.
