‘Disgrace’ as ‘one of the worst decisions ever’ sees 100-1 ‘winner’ lose race in the stewards’ room
PUNTERS were left fuming over what was branded ‘one of the worst decisions ever’ as a 100-1 horse was cruelly robbed of victory.
Mad Mike was first past the post at monster odds in the 1.30 maiden hurdle at Chepstow on Wednesday.
The Philip Hobbs & Johnson White-trained six-year-old fought back tenaciously to finish ahead of Rebecca Curtis’ 9-1 House Of Stories.
But the ding-dong sounded not long after victory to indicate stewards were investigating an incident at the final obstacle.
Sky Sports Racing footage showed Mad Mike swerving left and making contact with House Of Stories.
It meant not long after jockey Sean Houlihan was celebrating the huge win, the decision came through that the placings had been reversed.
House Of Stories was named winner and picked up the £3,800 first-place prize, while connections of Mad Mike were left with the £1,800 consolation.
The stewards’ report had yet to appear on the BHA website at the time of writing – and it was clear some punters agreed with their call.
But there were many who disagreed.
One person wrote: “One of the worst decisions ever? If you don’t jump a hurdle cleanly you lose the race.”
Another punter said on X: “Christ, not sure he can do much differently there. When you consider some that don’t get reversed…”
One comment read: “No way that stopped House of Stories winning, terrible decision.”
And another person was of the opinion the decision was: “Absolutely disgraceful.”
Mad Mike was matched at a massive 450 on the Betfair Exchange.
And William Hill announced they would pay out both horses as winners.
