And he hit the ground running on the pitch, scoring 11 goals and assisting five more in 14 matches.
Now he is enjoying the off-season by exploring the bright lights of Miami.
And, on Friday, Messi was pictured heading into Papi Steak Miami with childhood sweetheart Antonela, 35, while Inter Miami team-mate Luis Suarez trailed behind with his wife, Sofia Balbi.
Messi and Suarez, 36, were also joined by fellow Barcelona legend Jordi Alba.
But the surprise addition to their party was actress Sofia Vergara of Modern Family fame.
Vergara, 51, shared a picture on social media of her with the superstar footballers and their partners.
And she added the simple caption: “Miami .”
Meanwhile, TMZ are reporting that Messi shelled out an eye-watering amount on his meal at the establishment.

It is understood the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner spent $1,000 [£790] on a steak that he shared with Antonela.
The Argentine icon being joined by a number of his old Barcelona team-mates will have helped him settle in the US.
Following Messi’s arrival in June last year, Barca stars Sergio Busquets and Alba joined later in the summer.
Inter Miami then officially announced Suarez in December, with the Uruguayan set to make his MLS debut when the season gets underway in February.
