Murray, a five-time finalist in Melbourne, looked lacklustre throughout as he was outclassed by the 30th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

The Argentine prevailed 6-4 6-2 6-2 in less than two-and-a-half hours on the Kia Arena.

Etcheverry said: “It was an incredible match for me.

“It’s very tough to play a legend like Andy. He’s one of my idols.

“We played twice last year. It was a long battle like this.

“Today I played incredible. I hope I can continue with this level in the next match.”
